Dummy (2022) is a collection of mass-produced ‘dummy’ CCTV cameras which are presented along with their commercial packaging. The objects formally resemble real CCTV cameras but ultimately lack any optical functionality. With the addition of AA batteries, the stand-in camera devices display a sequence of red static or flashing lights, intended to imply the creation and storage of images. The cardboard packaging that accompanies each of the dummy cameras present instructions on use and installation, as well as texts describing the fake-ness, real-ness, and dummy-ness that these props propose to enact.

Nihaal Faizal (*1994) is an artist based in Bangalore, India. Recent solo exhibitions include; “(video art)”, Bill’s PC, Western Australia; “red curtains opening”, Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai; “Special FX”, Blueprint12, New Delhi; and “The Real Taste of India”, Mumbai Art Room, Bombay. In 2018, he founded Reliable Copy, a publishing house for works, projects, and writing by artists. Between 2013-16, he organised G.159, a project space in Yelahanka New Town.
